The Astronomical Applications Departmentof the U.S. Naval Observatory computes, from fundamental astronomicalreference data, the position, brightness, and other observablecharacteristics of celestial bodies, as well as the circumstancesof astronomical phenomena. This information is of criticalimportance to navigation, military operations planning,scientific research, surveying, accident reconstruction,architecture, and everyday activities. The products of the AADepartment - publications, software, algorithms, and expertise -are used by the U.S. Navy and the other armed services, civiliangovernment agencies, the scientific research community, and thepublic. Our products are regarded as benchmark standardsthroughout the world. The department also carries out a modestresearch program in celestial mechanics and positional astronomyto enable it to meet future needs.
